An Interview With Romance & Drama Writer Micah Flowers

Micah Flowers is a disabled Black writer and artist born in humble Abingdon, Virginia. Micah began writing when they were five years old. At the age of nineteen, they came out as nonbinary and genderfluid. Independent of creative pursuits they enjoy watching films, playing video games, studying psychology, and spending time with their many cats.

Below are some questions Micah answered for this Spotlight.

What drew you to writing, and what has your journey with the craft been like so far?

I was an avid reader growing up, and writing felt like a natural next step when I found myself bored by the books I read. I wanted to create my own stories where I could feel seen, a stark contrast to popular media following white, cishet and able-bodied individuals.

So far, the journey has been a lot of up and downs as I hone my craft while dealing with chronic pain. But I wouldn't trade it for anything, and overall I'm having a blast!

If you had to pick one, which of your stories was your favorite to write and why?

Now Shake It, Baby! has been my favorite story to write so far. I had so much fun developing the romance between the main characters, as well as spotlighting underrepresented disabilities in fiction.

And what was the most difficult part of getting your work published for the first time?

The patience involved with the process, which can sometimes be non-linear and change depending on external factors.

How would you describe your ideal writing set up?

My ideal writing set up is at my desk with plenty of water and a cute cat in my lap.

What was the most profound piece of advice you’ve ever received? How did it influence your writing?

Staying true to yourself and your work is more important than writing to market. In other words, showing up authentically versus putting out whatever's hot in the bookish community. This helped me focus on weaving unique stories that I actually want to tell instead of ones that are palatable and digestible to the general public.
